Pre-Nursing Definition

A preliminary status or track where students complete required foundation classes before applying to a formal nursing major (62 total prerequisite credits). *Please note that students cannot graduate as a Pre-Nursing major, students must be admitted to and complete the Nursing program to graduate with the BSN degree.

The Difference

Pre-nursing is an academic preparation phase focused on general education and science prerequisites, whereas our nursing program is the professional core curriculum featuring hands-on clinical training. Formal application to the BSN program is required.

Students must meet the following requirements:

• Admitted to UNLV as a degree-seeking “Pre-Nursing” student
• Minimum 3.00 GPA
• 62 credits earned/ in progress at the time of application
• Courses evaluated for application points (Nursing calculation worksheet courses) includes: MATH 124, CHEM 108, KIN 223, KIN 224, BIOL 251A/L, NURS 299.
• Completion or in-progress status for all Pre-Nursing prerequisites with the required grades listed on the degree worksheet
• Students must register with the Division of Health Sciences Advising Center to submit a formal application to the full BSN program. If you have additional questions, please contact the Division of Health Sciences Advising Center.

Eligible Pre-Nursing students can apply to the 16-month Professional Nursing Track during the following three application cycles: Fall, Spring, and Summer.

• Apply in June for Fall BSN admission
• Apply in October for Spring BSN admission
• Apply in February for Summer BSN admission
