Placement Tests

All incoming ESL students take a placement test prior to the beginning of each semester unless they present an official language test score (TOEFL iBT, MTELP, IELTS, PTE, etc.). Following testing, students are placed in classes according to their placement scores.

Register for Testing

To register for the MTELP, MTELP Writing only, or Accuplacer, please follow these steps:

  1. Email elc@unlv.edu to obtain a test application form.
  2. Pay your fees at Cashiering Services.
  3. Bring the completed application form, the paid receipt to the English Language Center, and a government issued ID.
  4. When those documents have been received, you will be given an appointment for the required test.

Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTELP)

Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency is offered regularly for those students who want to be admitted to either undergraduate or graduate programs at UNLV. This test provides information about a student's proficiency in grammar, listening comprehension, reading and vocabulary, writing, and speaking.

Scores on the paper-based MTELP range from 23 to 100.

Undergraduate Scores

  • Paper-based MTELP: a score of 76 (61 iBT TOEFL) is required for undergraduate admission.

Graduate Scores

  • Paper-based MTELP: a score of 85 (80 iBT TOEFL) is required for graduate admission.

Accuplacer

All incoming ESL Degree Preparation students with no test scores will take this test before registering for classes. All incoming ESL Bridge Program students will take this test before the first day of classes. The Accuplacer test includes ESL Language Use, ESL Listening, ESL Reading Skills, ESL Sentence Meaning, and ESL WritePlacer. ACCUPLACER uses a multiple-choice format. There’s no time limit, so you can focus on doing your best to demonstrate your skills. For more information, please, visit Inside the Test. Duolingo English Test (DET)

Duolingo English Test (DET) is an affordable and convenient language certification option that is accepted by over 200 universities.  Duolingo English Test is for students who are outside of Las Vegas and do not have TOEFL iBT, MTELP, IELTS, PTE, etc. language proficiency test scores. DET is used for placement purposes in the ESL Bridge Program. A total score of 60 on the Duolingo English Test (DET) is needed to place in Level 6 (Academic) of the ESL Bridge Program.
