Testing and Placement

Placement Tests

All incoming ESL students take a placement test prior to the beginning of each semester unless they present an official language test score (TOEFL iBT, MTELP, IELTS, PTE, etc.). Following testing, students are placed in classes according to their placement scores.

Register for Testing

To register for the MTELP, MTELP Writing only, or Accuplacer, please follow these steps:

  1. Email to obtain a test application form.
  2. Pay your fees at Cashiering Services.
  3. Bring the completed application form, the paid receipt to the English Language Center, and a government issued ID.
  4. When those documents have been received, you will be given an appointment for the required test.

Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTELP)

Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency is offered regularly for those students who want to be admitted to either undergraduate or graduate programs at UNLV. This test provides information about a student's proficiency in grammar, listening comprehension, reading and vocabulary, writing, and speaking.

Scores on the paper-based MTELP range from 23 to 100.

Undergraduate Scores

  • Paper-based MTELP: a score of 76 (61 iBT TOEFL) is required for undergraduate admission.

Graduate Scores

  • Paper-based MTELP: a score of 85 (80 iBT TOEFL) is required for graduate admission.

All incoming ESL Degree Preparation students with no test scores will take this test before registering for classes. All incoming Intensive English Program students will take this test before the first day of classes. The Accuplacer test includes ESL Language Use, ESL Listening, ESL Reading Skills, ESL Sentence Meaning, and ESL WritePlacer. ACCUPLACER uses a multiple-choice format. There’s no time limit, so you can focus on doing your best to demonstrate your skills. For more information, please, visit Inside the Test.
