In the ELC, students study in a class with others at the same level of English proficiency determined by the Michigan Placement Test. This test provides information about a student's proficiency in grammar, listening comprehension, reading and vocabulary, writing, and speaking. Following testing, students are interviewed and placed accordingly.
Michigan Test of English Language Placement (MTELP)
Michigan Test of English Language Placement is offered regularly for those students who want to be admitted to either undergraduate or graduate programs at UNLV.
Scores on the MTELP range from 23 to 100. A score of 76 (61 iBT TOEFL) is required for undergraduate admission. A score of 85 (80 iBT TOEFL) is required for graduate admission.
A test of oral proficiency, the SPEAK test is offered each semester for graduate students who wish to qualify for teaching assistantships.
