110 - Classrooms

Definition: A room or space used primarily for instruction classes that is not tied to a specific subject or discipline by equipment in the room or the configuration of the space.

Utilization: Industry Standard - Scheduled for 30 weekly contact hours of academic use at 65% occupancy.

NSHE Standard

  • <12 hours per week is considered low.
  • Occupancy is looking at a 98 hour week (Monday-Sunday 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.).

UNLV Goal

  • Classrooms scheduled for 40 weekly contact hours of academic use.
  • 80% occupancy (i.e., number of enrolled students compared to seats available).

Hierarchy of Classroom Scheduling (in order below)

  1. Classroom requests to accommodate individuals with disabilities. Accommodation request must be on file with UNLV’s Office of Equal Employment and Title IX.
  2. General classroom scheduling by 25Live Optimizer based on enrollment capacity of sections, department-based location preferences, and requested room features.
  3. Ad hoc requests from instructors or departments based on personal preference.
  4. Departments with Priority Scheduling of space must follow the guidelines for academic scheduling.
    1. Follow Standard Meeting Patterns.
    2. Classes must meet 80% occupancy unless otherwise noted in agreement.

General Purpose

General-purpose classrooms are those spaces having features that can meet the needs of class sections in any department or area of study. For example, most lecture halls with fixed seating and classrooms with table-and-chair arrangements serve as general- purpose rooms. The Office of the Registrar will use general-purpose classrooms to accommodate a wide range of classes.

ALL classrooms (including those that are part of a new construction project) will be considered General Purpose space unless previously approved as departmentally scheduled.

Priority Scheduling

Occasionally, a department has specific need for some feature or location of a room (ie, connected to a prep room). In these cases, the department may request to have priority scheduling of that space. With priority scheduling, the department schedules its own academic classes in a designated general purpose room during the open build period. These classes must be offered during standard class times and have 80% of stations filled unless otherwise noted in the agreement. After the open build period is over, the room is opened up to general use and the Registrar's Office will place other classes in the room. The Registrar's Office will move classes that the department places in the room if they do not meet the criteria above. An ongoing review of priority scheduled space will be conducted every academic year by the Provost, Registrar’s Office, and Space Management to review space and seat utilization. Priority Scheduling is rarely approved and may be changed if the program or space no longer meets the criteria.

Departmentally Scheduled

A number of classrooms, due to their unique features, are used exclusively by certain academic departments. The Office of the Registrar excludes these rooms from the standard classroom assignment process. However, departments are expected to enter the room assignments in myUNLV so that they appear on the class schedule for students. These classrooms are also expected to be scheduled during standard class times and meet the university goals of being in use 40 hours per week at 80% occupancy. Departments are encouraged to share these classrooms with other departments when not being used. An ongoing review of departmentally scheduled space will be conducted every academic year by the Provost, Registrar’s Office, and Space Management to review space and seat utilization.

Technology

All general purpose classrooms are outfitted with standard classroom technology (lectern, pc, blu-ray, auxiliary inputs, document camera, projector, screen, and sound system).
