If You Have Never Applied for VA Education Benefits or You Are Requesting to Change Your Benefits to Chapter 33

  • The VA prefers that you complete the VonAPP application on the VA Education Benefits website. Be sure to print off the reference number you receive when you submit the online form. The paper application (form 22-1990) is available on this website under Forms to Process Your Veteran’s Benefits. The paper application should be mailed to the appropriate regional processing office. Always keep a copy of the application form for your records. The VA will process the application and send a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the student. A copy of the COE must be given to the certifying official.
  • The VA requires you to send an official copy of your military transcript to UNLV for evaluation. Click here for information.
  • Bring a copy of your DD-214 Copy 4 (discharge paper) to the certifying official.
  • A completed UNLV Semester Enrollment Form is required for each semester you want to receive benefits. The form is available on this website under Forms to Process Your Veteran’s Benefits.
  • A copy of your degree sheet. This is available from your academic advisor. The copy given to the certifying official should show all transferred, completed credits. Certification for benefits cannot be done without this information.
  • If you are concurrently enrolled with another school and want those credits certified, complete the Concurrent Enrollment Form available on this website under Forms to Process Your Veteran’s Benefits.

You Are Applying for Chapter 33 Benefits as a Spouse or Dependent of an Active Duty Service Person

  • The service person must determine if dependents are eligible to receive the transferred benefits. For the most up-to-date information, refer to the VA Education Benefits website under the information about the Post-9/11. The VA prefers you complete the electronic version of form 22-1990E on the VA Education Benefits website. The paper application (form 22-1990E) is available on this website under forms. The paper application should be mailed to the appropriate regional VA processing office. Always keep a copy of the application form for your records. The VA will process the application and send a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the student. A copy of the COE must be given to the certifying VA official at UNLV.

You Have Been Receiving Chapter 33 Benefits at Another School

  • Complete form 22-1995. Form is on this website under Forms to Process Your Veteran’s Benefits.
  • A copy of your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for Chapter 33 benefits must be given to the VA certifying official. You received the COE at the time you originally applied for Chapter 33 benefits. If you have lost or misplaced the COE, contact the VA at 1-888-442-4551 for a duplicate copy.
