Description

Technology is interwoven in education spaces and can have positive and negative effects. Online learning, smartphones, and artificial intelligence each present opportunities and challenges. This session will focus on the implications of technology use and mindful self-regulation for today’s students and teachers. The presentation will include an introduction to mindful self-regulation and related learning constructs. We will discuss recent research and implications for the design of instruction, classroom activities, and student engagement. 

Admission is free and CEUs are available for those attending the live event. A recording of the event will be available online.

Speakers

Kendall Hartley, Ph.D.

Associate professor, department of teaching & learning

Dr. Kendall Hartley is an associate professor of educational technology in the department of teaching and learning. Dr. Hartley specializes in the analysis of individual characteristics and the implications for learning with technology. He is particularly interested in the role of self-regulatory skills and the use of the smartphone for learning. He also has extensive experience in designing instructional and informational Internet web sites. Dr. Hartley has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed educational research journals including the Journal of Educational Computing Research, Education Researcher, Journal of Technology and Teacher Education and the Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia. Prior to coming to UNLV, Dr. Hartley taught high school science for five years in Nebraska public schools. He currently teaches graduate courses in instructional design, online learning, and multimedia programming.

Sarah M. Wolff, Ph.D.

Post-doc, educational psychology

Dr. Sarah M. Wolff is currently a postdoc. She holds a Ph.D. in educational psychology with an emphasis in assessment and quantitative analysis; a graduate certificate in online teaching and training; a graduate certificate in program evaluation; and a graduate certificate in teaching.
