Join Marcedes Butler and Jeff Shih on a captivating exploration of community engagement with a specific focus on the UNLV College of Education’s partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada. This session will share how academic success and research integration initiatives had a positive effect on the community in which the non-profit resides.

Speakers

Marcedes Butler, Ed.D. – Postdoctoral Scholar, Collaborative Educational Programs

As a Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada Fellow, Marcedes Butler’s research is focused on reshaping the academic success and integration research initiatives for the 13 clubhouses across Southern Nevada. Additionally, her academic journey includes a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California, specializing in Educational Psychology.

Jeffrey C. Shih, Ph.D. – Professor and Associate Dean of Student and Community Engagement

Jeffrey Shih is a professor of elementary mathematics education that joined the UNLV faculty in 1999. Shih earned a B.A. in statistics with a minor in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. His Ph.D. in social research methodology/quantitative methods from UCLA focused on the development of frameworks of rational number understanding for preservice teachers. Shih currently teaches undergraduate and graduate mathematics education courses and advises mathematics education doctoral students.
