Description

Dr. Kathryn Allen from SUNY Potsdam discusses their research on digital heritage initiatives in Greenland for the UNLV Anthropology Department's spring 2023 Proseminar Lecture Series.

Like many places with rich heritage around the world, Greenland faces significant challenges in the coming years. Climate change paired with a massive uptick in tourism will have a significant impact on the people and places of this arctic nation. The cultural heritage community, government, and people of Greenland are grappling with how best to share places like the new UNESCO World Heritage Site, Aasivissuit- Nipisat Inuit Hunting Ground Between Ice and Sea. My team and I are experimenting with heritage communication efforts that utilize different digital technologies. In this talk I will share two of these initiatives, including a virtual study abroad completed in fall 2021 and a microlearning course for travelers in production now. In addition to sharing these projects, I will discuss the role of archaeology and anthropology on the future of tourism, particularly in places undergoing rapid changes.
