Southern Nevadans can golf for a good cause on April 24 as UNLV and supporters Blake and Lynda Maxfield team up to host the inaugural Fostering Scholars charity golf fundraiser. 

The event, which takes place at the Conestoga Golf Course in Mesquite, supports UNLV students who’ve experienced foster care and are transitioning from high school to university life. 

Students in UNLV’s Fostering Scholars Program have access to specialized university and community-based resources that address educational, social, emotional, physical, and financial needs. The program currently serves more than 50 UNLV students. 

“We are passionate about supporting the UNLV Fostering Scholars Program and are dedicated to helping Heather Richardson, the program coordinator, to improve the resources available to students by promoting and helping to maintain strong support within the surrounding community,” said Lynda Maxfield.

The Fostering Scholars program launched in 2021 and is supported in part by a grant from the Walter S. Johnson Foundation. Additional funds are essential because most students still experience notable financial gaps after drawing on every available resource. These gaps include things like meals, basic needs, textbooks, transportation to campus, and between-semester housing. 

“It is with the gracious help from our community members and donors, like the Maxfield’s, who keep valuable programs like ‘Fostering Scholars’ the ability to expand and help more students attain success at UNLV,” said Keith Rogers, interim vice president for student affairs at UNLV.
