Rights and Responsibilities of the Peer Mediators
During the Mediation Process, the Peer Mediator Must
- Be neutral/impartial.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Be honest.
- Follow all program guidelines.
- Be prepared and show up for all mediation meetings.
During the Mediation Process, the Peer Mediator Can
- Direct questions to the participants.
- Set ground rules (in conjunction with participants) for the meeting.
- Terminate meeting if participants are not engaging inappropriate behavior.
- Recommend the conflict be addressed by the Office of Student Conduct if no agreement can be reached.
- Assist in drawing up agreement at conclusion of mediation.
Rights and Responsibilities of the Participant
During the Mediation Process, the Participant Must
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Be honest.
- Have good faith in the process.
- Follow all program and meeting guidelines.
- Show up for all meetings.
During the Mediation Process, the Participant Can
- Direct questions to other participants.
- Set ground rules (in conjunction with student mediator) for the meeting.
- Terminate meeting if the peer mediator loses neutrality.
- Terminate meeting if participants are not engaging inappropriate behavior.
- Recommend the conflict be addressed by the Student Judicial Affairs Office, if no agreement can be reached.
