Rights and Responsibilities of the Peer Mediators

During the Mediation Process, the Peer Mediator Must

  • Be neutral/impartial.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Be honest.
  • Follow all program guidelines.
  • Be prepared and show up for all mediation meetings.

During the Mediation Process, the Peer Mediator Can

  • Direct questions to the participants.
  • Set ground rules (in conjunction with participants) for the meeting.
  • Terminate meeting if participants are not engaging inappropriate behavior.
  • Recommend the conflict be addressed by the Office of Student Conduct if no agreement can be reached.
  • Assist in drawing up agreement at conclusion of mediation.

Rights and Responsibilities of the Participant

During the Mediation Process, the Participant Must

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Be honest.
  • Have good faith in the process.
  • Follow all program and meeting guidelines.
  • Show up for all meetings.

During the Mediation Process, the Participant Can

  • Direct questions to other participants.
  • Set ground rules (in conjunction with student mediator) for the meeting.
  • Terminate meeting if the peer mediator loses neutrality.
  • Terminate meeting if participants are not engaging inappropriate behavior.
  • Recommend the conflict be addressed by the Student Judicial Affairs Office, if no agreement can be reached.
