Field Practicum
The field practicum is a vital part of your professional development in both the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs. It aligns with the program mission, foundational curriculum, and advanced concentrations in Direct Practice and Management and Community Practice.
Application Process
New Students: Apply to UNLV
If you are currently not enrolled as a student at UNLV, you will need to apply and gain acceptance to the university. Upon admission, you will be enrolled as a pre-social work student.
Current UNLV Students: Apply for Full Admission into the Bachelors of Social Work Degree
After you have completed all your prerequisites as a pre-social work student, you can apply to be fully admitted into the social work program. Applicants must provide the following materials:
- Personal Statement
- What experiences, values, or goals have influenced your decision to pursue a degree in social work? You may include personal or academic experiences, what draws you to helping others, and why social work feels like the right fit.

What strengths do you bring to the program, and what areas would you like to grow in as a future social worker? Consider qualities that will help you succeed as a student and as a professional in the field.
- Volunteer and Work Experience (Optional): List any volunteer experience you’ve had. You may also include relevant work experience (no documentation or job history required).
- Partially Completed Degree Sheet: You must obtain this from the College of Urban Affairs Advising Center to show your academic progress. Official transcripts are not required.

Application Dates
- Spring: The application for spring semester admission opens annually on October 1 and closes on November 1.
- Fall: The application for fall semester admission opens annually on March 1 and closes on April 1.

Career Opportunities
Practitioners work directly with individuals, families, and groups to help people cope, change, and solve problems. Social workers may also provide mental, behavioral, and emotional counseling and therapy. Social workers work with community stakeholders, organizations, neighborhoods and communities, and in activities such as community organization and development, policy and legislative advocacy.
