Since 1957, UNLV has undergone an amazing transformation, from a dusty outpost on the south edge of town to a thriving urban research institution. Along the way, thanks to its innovative frontier spirit, UNLV has kept pace with one of the country’s fastest-growing and most enterprising cities.
The Army ROTC program at UNLV is proud of its history and is one of the best ROTC programs in the western United States. The program trains leadership and other essential skills necessary for students to learn how to lead today’s soldiers.
The program is run by Army officers and noncommissioned officers with a wealth of experience.

The History of Army ROTC at UNLV
First established in 1980, then re-established in 1998 as a satellite program attached to UNR, the UNLV AROTC Blackjack Battalion is a part of the rich community and history of the Las Vegas Valley. After the tragic events of 9/11, the program saw an increase in enrollment. Starting in Fall 2025, the Blackjack Battalion is becoming its own, independent-standing program. Cadets have the chance to compete for scholarships and life-changing opportunities in order to improve themselves as individuals and officers in the United States Army. The Blackjack Battalion is one of two AROTC programs offered in the state of Nevada. Thanks to the efforts of past and current cadre and staff—with special thanks to MAJ (ret) Ross Bryant, executive director of UNLV’s Military and Veterans Services—the Blackjack Battalion has contributed commissioned officers to the Nevada National Guard, the Army Reserve, and the Active Duty component of the Army for years.
