210 - Class Laboratory

Definition: A space used primarily for formally or regularly scheduled instruction (including associated mandatory, but non-credit-earning laboratories) that require special purpose equipment or a specific space configuration for student participation, experimentation, observation, or practice in an academic discipline.

Utilization: National standard scheduled for 20 weekly contact hours of academic use at 80% occupancy.

NSHE Standard

  • <6 hours per week is considered low.
  • No standard for occupancy.

UNLV Goal

  • Class Labs scheduled for 20 weekly contact hours of academic use.
  • 80% occupancy (i.e., number of enrolled students compared to seats available).

Class Laboratories are typically departmentally assigned and scheduled. The exception is for Class Lab-Computers that are departmentally scheduled during the open build period. If a department does not have a Class Lab - Computer or needs access to an additional lab, they can submit a request through the Semester Request Form or submit a request to the lab supervisor of the space they are requesting. These are processed on a first come first serve basis. When departments are building their semester schedules, they need to use the room characteristic 05 - Class Lab Computer for any class that requires a computer lab. Once the open build has closed, the Registrar's Office will place any classes that still need a placement where there is availability.

215 - Class Lab Service

Definition: A space that directly serves one or more class laboratories as an extension of the activities in those spaces.

Utilization: Course-related materials, equipment, etc that are organized in a tidy manner. It is recommended that the contents are reviewed annually.
