Second Annual Sunrise Ceremony

When

Aug. 26, 2023, 7am to 10am

Campus Location

Description

The UNLV American Indian Community invites you to the second annual Sunrise Ceremony. We will begin at 7 a.m. and breakfast will be served afterward. This event is intended to begin the new academic year in a blessed way. All students, staff, faculty, and community are welcome as we support the academic success and perseverance of our Indigenous Students.

Within American Indian cultures, new beginnings require spiritual centeredness and focus to ensure a positive journey. When such beginnings occur, it is customary to mark the occasion with a time of reflection and blessing at the start of the day. In that vein, the American Indian community at UNLV will be sponsoring a Sunrise Ceremony to welcome the new academic year and provide positive blessings to all new, and continuing students, faculty and staff within the American Indian community.

This event began in 2022 to re-engage communities affected by the pandemic. The ceremony welcomes members from the Nuwu (Paiute) community to begin the ceremony and officially welcome the UNLV as visitors to this land.
