Description

In June 2026, graduate students in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program completed an intensive, one-week field research residency in Italy. Enrolled in ART 747 with Kristen Keach, students engaged in an advanced research-creation framework designed to transform classical art history into active, embodied studio knowledge.

Rather than acting as passive viewers, these MFA candidates utilized various Italian cities as active laboratories. Armed with daily field journals, students paired rigorous deep looking and analytical sketching with site-specific, graduate-caliber oral presentations on the materiality, patronage, and contemporary relevance of Renaissance and Medieval masterworks.

The residency serves as the conceptual catalyst for their ongoing four-week independent study back on campus, during which students are executing “The Palimpsest Project”—translating their on-site visual research into a resolved contemporary artistic intervention paired with a scholarly critical defense.

Participating artists: Alina Lindquist, Lyrissa Nicole, Erika Petersom, Patrica Suslo, Reese Wallace, Justin Webb

Reception: Art Walk, Friday, October 23 from 5-9 p.m.
