Painting of the sky. The sky and the top of a mountain range are depicted with clear horizontal stripes of blue, orange, purple, and brown. A line of short vertical marks cuts a narrow path through the middle of the “sky,” as if a beam of light is shining upwards from the earth.

Description

The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art and Nextet present Music at the Exhibitions, featuring new UNLV student compositions inspired by the exhibitions Living Here and Perception. The works will be premiered in the Museum’s galleries by student performers from the School of Music. Journey from one artwork to the next, hearing a new premiere at every stop. The composers will be on hand to talk about the relationship between the art on the wall and the music they have created.

Each composition student was invited to choose an artwork and respond to it. Music at the Exhibitions will feature:

  • Daniele Aguon responding to Tsinelas by Sherwin Rivera Tibayan
  • Shara Alexander responding to Empty by Dirk Staschke
  • Natalie Dechaine responding to Its Teeth Are Soft by Mikayla Whitmore
  • Liam Kornoely responding to TH1223 by Julie Oppermann
  • Vivian Le responding to The Afternoon Dream by May Nguyen
  • Colin Marks responding to Channel by Chad Brown
  • Matthew Nell responding to Curtain by Cindy Wright.

The compositions will be performed by Andrew Amaya, Nick Carozza, Paris Cho, Elton Chong, Ilinca Cristinoiu, Natalie Dechaine, Ethan De Souza, Alexander Felix, Elizabeth Lopes, Colin Marks, Savannah Mengistu, Leanna Oliver, and Victoria Williams.

Music at the Exhibitions takes place at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art from 3:30–4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 5. Admission is free. No reservation is necessary. Everyone is welcome.
