Take a deep dive into a world of beauty and resiliance with Emmanuel Ortega Rodríguez, Ph.D., the curator of Contemporary Ex-votos: Devotion Beyond Medium. On Saturday, April 20, Ortega will lead a free live tour of the newly-opened exhibition, illuminating the history of traditional Mexican ex-voto paintings, and sharing his insights into the contemporary Latinx artists whose work is on view.

Ortega is the Marilynn Thoma Scholar and Assistant Professor in Art of the Spanish Americas at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the author of the upcoming book, Visualizing Franciscan Anxiety and the Distortion of Native Resistance: The Domesticating Mission.

Contemporary Ex-votos: Devotion Beyond Medium will be on view at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art from April 19 – November 23, 2024.
