Description
The UNLV Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery invites the community to Camelot, a special exhibition celebrating Jerry Schefcik and his 37 years of dedicated service to the gallery and the art community at UNLV. A Las Vegan since 1961, Schefcik joined UNLV as curator of the Donna Beam Gallery in 1989 and became its director in 1991. He is a central figure in the Las Vegas art scene and a longtime curator, advisor, juror, and mentor to arts organizations across the Western region.
Inspired by this treasured collection, participating artists have created works responding to the theme through representation, memory, symbolism, humor, and personal connection. A $1,000 purchase prize will be awarded to one work, which will be added to the gallery’s permanent collection.
Why camels? The Schefcik Camelot Collection began 47 years ago, on the newly married Schefcik’s first Christmas, when three camel figures were given to him as holiday decorations. A few more arrived the next Christmas, and the next, and the idea of a collection was born. Over time, camels were added for birthdays, holidays, vacations, and just because, with family and friends joining in. The collection has grown to almost a thousand figures in brass, pewter, glass, acrylic, wood, ceramic, beads, stone, jade, crystal, fabric, cloisonné, leather, rattan, and more. It has become more than a collection: a community of people from diverse origins who share a common bond, the Camelot family.
