Things to Consider

Before a purchase is made, it is important to mention that there are two different types of tablets (iPad or similar device):

  • Cellular
  • Wi-Fi only

Depending on the type of tablet you want (cellular or Wi-Fi), the way you purchase your device will vary.

Cellular

Since many tablets also have cellular radios built into them to access the internet over the cellular network, the tablets can also be purchased from a wireless provider. Just as a cell phone purchased from one carrier may not work on another carrier’s network, a tablet purchased from one carrier may not operate on another carrier’s network.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi capable tablets can be purchased using a P-Card, but be aware that university policy will not allow the use of the P-Card to pay for monthly service fees for wireless connectivity. Using a P-Card to pay for wireless service to avoid using UNLV’s preferred wireless carrier is not permitted and may result in budget complications.

Device Storage

Storage capacity depends on how you intend to use your iPad/tablet. If you are planning to use your iPad/tablet primarily for email access, web browsing, viewing or composing documents and spreadsheets, and using a few apps, the 16 GB model should suffice.

If you will be using a variety of apps or working with multimedia files, you will likely want the 32 GB or 64 GB models. Additional storage cannot be added later, so it may be better to buy more storage than you will need, than to buy too little storage.

Display Adapters

The iPad/tablet requires an additional cable to connect to campus projectors and monitors. If you plan to connect your iPad/tablet to a projector or another type of external screen, you will need a display adapter. You may purchase a VGA adapter, HDMI adapter, or both.

Purchasing an iPad/Tablet

Tablets can be purchased in several different ways, and using several different payment methods. Much like desktop and laptop computers, tablets can be purchased directly from the manufacturer or from a reseller.

Billing

  • The device must be purchased using the monthly billing account.
  • We are unable to bill the device price separately from the monthly billing account.
  • Due to fiscal year end, no phones will be ordered April 15-Jun 30 to ensure proper FY billing.
  • Telecom bills after the month ends and T-Mobile bills mid-month.
  • This pertains to all accounts. This is not specific to state fund billing.

FAQs

What if I have a Wi-Fi only version tablet but still need to connect to the internet away from a Wi-Fi connection?

Mi-Fi/Hotspot devices, or aircards, can be purchased from T-Mobile to create hotspots for iPads that do not have the built-in 3G/4G/LTE capability. These devices will require separate data plans and incur monthly charges just as any other wireless cellular device.

You can also activate your smartphone (iOS or Android) with a mobile hotspot (tethering) feature to connect your Mi-Fi/Hotspot only tablet to the internet. This service is available through T-Mobile for an additional monthly cost.

Does my tablet/iPad have to be barcoded by UNLV Inventory Control for Tracking Purposes?
Yes, since these devices have internal memory similar to a computer, the devices must be bar coded and tracked in accordance with NSHE policy. All wireless sensitive devices are UNLV barcoded and tracked in accordance with NSHE policy upon delivery and added to the department’s inventory.
