Sankofa Advocate Scholarship

"Sankofa" is a word from the Akan people of Ghana. It is symbolized by a mythical bird that has its feet pointed forward with its head turned back, picking up an egg. The term expresses the importance of using knowledge from the past to guide planning for the future.  The Sankofa Advocate Scholarship seeks to award students that utilize their knowledge to contribute to the liberation of historically marginalized identities. Scholarships are awarded up to $5,000.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Enrolled UNLV student
  • Student must have a minimum 2.50 GP A; and
  • Student must demonstrate financial need as determined by the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Alternative Need Determination Form; and
  • Students must be making minimum satisfactory academic progress as defined by the Financial Aid & Scholarships office; and
  • Student must be an active member of a Black student organization, or another organization open to all, but whose mission seeks to advance the needs of populations historically underrepresented in higher education

Priority given to:

Students who are "first-generation" college students (neither parent/guardian has a four-year degree from any country).

Timeline for the 2022-2023 School Year:

  • Opens: Monday October 3,  2022
  • Closes: Friday November 18th 2022
  • Review of Applications: December 2022
  • Notify recipients: February 3rd,   2023
  • Award Disbursed: Fall 2023 & Spring 2024

The CSUN & SDSJ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual (LGTQIA) Empowerment and Advocacy Scholarship recognizes undergraduate students  - regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation - who possess leadership qualities on and off campus that help transform the social climate of UNLV and the Las Vegas community to benefit, empower, and uplift lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be an undergraduate student at UNLV.
  • Must be an individual who leads or participates in activities, events, organizations, or initiatives that empower the LGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Must maintain a 2.50 GPA or higher throughout the duration of the scholarship disbursement period.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 (six) credits throughout the duration of the scholarship disbursement period.
  • Open to all students who meet all of the eligibility requirements regardless of citizenship status.

CSUN & SDSJ Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern (APIME) Community Leadership and Advocacy Scholarship

The CSUN & SDSJ APIME Community Leadership and Advocacy Scholarship recognizes undergraduate students - regardless of ethnic/racial identity and citizenship status - who enact leadership skills on or off-campus that help transform the social climate of UNLV and/or the Las Vegas community to benefit, advocate for, support, and uplift Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern diaspora communities.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be an undergraduate student at UNLV.
  • Must be an individual who leads or participates in activities, events, organizations, or initiatives that empower the APIME communities.
  • Must maintain a 2.50 GPA or higher throughout the duration of the scholarship disbursement period.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 (six) credits throughout the duration of the scholarship disbursement period.
  • Open to all students who meet all of the eligibility requirements regardless of citizenship status.

CSUN & SDSJ Justice for Black Lives Scholarship

As we continue to navigate through a society with multiple systems that uphold anti-Black racism, it is crucial to develop strategic actions to dismantle those systems.  In collaboration with CSUN, the Office of Student Diversity & Social Justice created the Justice for Black Lives Scholarship.  The Justice for Black Lives Scholarship is meant to recognize undergraduate students who have participated in various forms of activism and social justice advocacy, on and off-campus, for the purpose of advancing the African diaspora toward cultural sustainability and communal liberation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be an undergraduate student at UNLV.
  • Must be an individual who leads or participates in activities, events, organizations, or initiatives that benefit, advocate, support, and uplift the Black/African American community.
  • Must maintain a 2.50 GPA or higher throughout the duration of the scholarship disbursement period.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 (six) credits throughout the duration of the scholarship disbursement period.
  • Open to all students who meet all of the eligibility requirements regardless of citizenship status.
