Eric Chiang, Ph.D.

Eric Chiang is a Professor in Residence of economics in the Lee Business School. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Florida in 2002. Prior to joining UNLV, he was a tenured associate professor and the Director of Instructional Technology at Florida Atlantic University, and has taught over 20,000 students from introductory to Ph.D.-level courses. In 2009, Eric won FAU’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year, the university’s top teaching award. Eric has published 40 journal articles, many of which focus on student learning and achievement. He is also the author of Economics: Principles for a Changing World, an economics textbook currently used in over 80 universities.

Eric’s teaching philosophy emphasizes using everyday examples to illustrate economic concepts in action. His main objectives for principles of economics students include data analysis, financial literacy, and global perspectives. Having visited all 7 continents and over 100 countries, Eric incorporates cultural examples from around the world in his courses. From 2012 to 2018, he produced a mini-documentary on YouTube titled “Around the World in 80 Hours” that shows how economic problems are solved in unique ways. In 2023, Eric was a guest host on the Planet Money podcast “All You Can Eat Economics”.

In his spare time, Eric enjoys playing mini-golf and is a member of the U.S. Professional Mini-Golf Association. He competes in several regional and national tournaments each year. In 2019, he competed in the first season of ABC’s game show Holey Moley with NBA star Stephen Curry.
