M.A. Admission Requirements

Admission to the department is competitive, with only the strongest applicants gaining admission in any given year. Applicants must complete the Graduate College online application. The following department application materials must be uploaded into the online application:

  1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores
  2. Two letters of recommendation by the recommendation provider
  3. A personal statement explaining why you want to enter the master's program
  4. Applicants for admission must have earned:
    1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
    2. A grade point average of at least 3.00.
    3. Satisfactory scores on the GRE General Test. Minimum scores are 500 (153**) on the verbal and 500 (144**) on the quantitative sections of the exam; we also consider the analytical writing score. In unusual circumstances, students who do not meet the above criteria may still be admitted.

Application Process

If you are applying to the MA program in Political Science, you must apply directly to the Graduate College. Our department also requires the following items to be uploaded into the online application:

  1. Official Transcripts: Transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work are required to be sent directly to the Graduate College. (unofficial transcripts: upload to online application).
  2. GRE Scores: You must have your scores on the GRE General Test sent to:

As a rule we do not accept another standardized exam in place of the GRE.

  1. Personal Statement: Upload to online application a personal statement explaining why you want to enter the particular degree program at UNLV.
  2. Letters of Recommendation: Use recommendation provider list to input the names and contact information for each recommender (minimum 2 required). Recommendation providers (e.g., current or former instructors) must submit the letter of recommendation online.
  3. Graduate Assistantships: If you are a new student to UNLV, please complete the graduate assistantship portion in the online application. If you are a current student (you must create a new log-in) and want to apply for a graduate assistantship, follow the process detailed at the Graduate College website. The deadline for assistantship applications is February 1 for the following academic year.
