Statement of Purpose

Official email communications support the academic and administrative needs of students, faculty, and staff within the campus community. Unless otherwise prohibited by law, the university and its faculty may communicate with students officially by email and expect recipients to read and respond to official email messages promptly.

Official UNLV email accounts are created for all admitted students in the form of [ACE ID]@unlv.nevada.edu. These accounts must be activated by students through UNLV Information Technology Help Desk or online.

Entities Affected by this Policy

All students, faculty and staff are affected by this policy.

Who Should Read this Policy

All students, faculty, and staff should read this policy.

Policy

This policy outlines acceptable use, student responsibilities, and the eligibility and management of the Rebelmail account.

Rebelmail Account Eligibility and Access Duration

Rebelmail is the official UNLV account provided to students. Students receive a Rebelmail (@unlv.nevada.edu) account upon admission to the university. This account provides access to Google Workspace for Education services, including Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Calendar, and other collaboration tools. Account access will remain active throughout a student's enrollment, with a grace period after graduation or withdrawal.

Once a student no longer meets eligibility requirements, access to the account and all associated Google Workspace services will be revoked. Students will be notified through their Rebelmail account prior to deactivation. UNLV Information Technology (UNLV IT) reserves the right to delete Rebelmail accounts and all associated data once they have been deactivated. Students are responsible for backing up any data stored on the Rebelmail account before it is terminated.

UNLV IT defines the eligibility requirements, storage space, and duration of access, as outlined here.

Student Responsibilities

  • Regularly monitor your Rebelmail account, preferably on a daily basis, to ensure timely receipt of administrative and academic communications.
  • Maintain adequate storage space within your Rebelmail account to reliably receive official correspondence.
  • Respond promptly to communications identified as time-sensitive or requiring immediate action.
  • Students are responsible for complying with any email or electronic communication requirements specified in their course syllabi, and such use must remain consistent with this policy.

Acceptable Uses

Rebelmail accounts are intended for educational, research, and administrative purposes in accordance with the Board of Regents Handbook, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 23 on Computing Resources. Account holders are required to:

  • Respect the rights and privacy of other users.
  • Protect the integrity of UNLV’s computing systems.
  • Comply with all pertinent license agreements, contractual obligations, and relevant federal, state, and university policies.
  • Refrain from using email for personal, financial, or business gains.
  • Adhere to all brand guidelines related to the university marks, accompanying assets, and related items, including but not limited to, the university logos and official colors and fonts.

Violations of this policy are also subject to the UNLV Student Conduct Code. The following actions are prohibited:

  • Impersonation of a university office, faculty/staff member, or another student.
  • Disruption of services (e.g., spreading computer viruses or sending excessive unwanted messages).
  • Gaining unauthorized access to another user's account or resources.
  • Using email for stalking, harassment, or any activity prohibited by law or university policy.

Inappropriate use of Rebelmail may result in suspension or termination of access. Specific actions that may lead to suspension or termination include:

  • Warnings: Violations of this policy that do not require immediate suspension of a user’s account will generally result in a warning.
  • Immediate Suspension: UNLV IT will immediately suspend a user’s account if the security or operation of UNLV’s computing systems is at risk or when a user’s use is prohibited by federal or state law.
  • Permanent Revocation: A violation that requires the immediate suspension of a user’s account and/or repeated violations of this policy may result in the permanent loss of access to Rebelmail.

Email Redirection

Students may redirect emails from their Rebelmail accounts to personal email addresses at their own risk. However, the university is not responsible for the handling of redirected emails by external vendors or departmental/unit servers. Redirecting email does not absolve students of their responsibility to check their [ACE ID]@unlv.nevada.edu accounts regularly.
