K-9 & Special Event Security

Supervisor: Lt. William Newman
University Police Department K-9 Handlers: Officer Darrell Johnson and Officer Bruce Taylor

The UNLV Department Police Services provides a safe environment for patrons who attend more than 200 special events each year, including:

  • Presidential visits
  • The National Finals Rodeo
  • The Mountain West Conference basketball tournament and other sporting events
  • Major concert events

UNLV Police K-9 Patrol

Prior to 2007, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (A.T.F.) provided UNLV with the services of an explosives detection canine to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved. In 2007, the UNLV Department of Police Services established its own canine program. Officer Darrell Johnson and Officer Bruce Taylor trained for 288 hours with Buster and Simba, two Springer Spaniels from Ireland. The officers and their canines trained with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's K-9 Unit to serve in this capacity.
