Description

A Community Police Academy is an educational program designed to provide community members with insights into the operations, functions, and challenges of a local law enforcement agency. It is not to train an individual to be a "reserve police officer" but to produce informed citizens. The primary goal of a Community Police Academy is to promote better understanding and communication between the police department and the residents it serves. This program offers participants the opportunity to learn about various aspects of law enforcement, gain firsthand experience with police procedures, and foster stronger partnerships between police and the community.

You will:

  • Learn how university police officers, community service officers, and student cadets work to protect both residents and visitors
  • Observe how dispatchers manage high call volumes and complex incidents
  • Receive an inside look at specialized units such as detectives; K9 officers; traffic enforcement units; multi-assault, counter-terrorism action capabilities (MACTAC); community outreach and problem-solving unit (COPS/PSU); and emergency management.

This can be ideal for those interested in becoming law enforcement or for individuals who would like to know how university police officers support the safety and security on our campuses.
