Title: Three Stories of the Pawkar Raymi Fashion Show: Indigenous Elegance, Civil Society, & Anthropological Engagement

Speaker: Dr. Joseph Quick, Department of Anthropology

Abstract: In February each year, the Kichwa community of Peguche hosts Pawkar Raymi, one of the largest indigenous cultural and music festivals celebrated anywhere in the northern Andes. This talk explores the indigenous fashion show that has been put on by the Peguche neighborhood of Atahualpa as part of the festival, beginning in 2025. We will learn about the importance of indigenous elegance in the modern history of Pawkar Raymi, the complex array of institutions that have been involved in organizing the fashion show, and the unanticipated role of anthropological research in making the fashion show a reality.
