Sean Neiswenter, Ph.D., a professor at UNLV's School of Life Sciences will be giving a talk titled, "Who Let the Dogs Out!? How Coyote, Kit Fox, and Fido Share the Desert."
Abstract:
Hiking with your dogs is relaxing and fun but your beloved pooch isn’t the only canine out enjoying the desert. Coyote and kit fox also call Nevada home. As Las Vegas continues to sprawl into the surrounding wildlands the opportunity for human-wildlife interactions escalates. Domestic dogs are known to have many negative impacts on native wildlife. Over more than two years, we monitored wildlife in Tule Springs Fossil Bed National Monument using motion-activated cameras to learn how three species of canine coexist in the park. I will review how our best friends can be wildlife’s obnoxious neighbors then discuss the findings of our research (Spoiler Alert: What’s the secret to their peace? Perfect timing.) Most importantly though, I will show you lots of cute dog pictures.
