Amanda Leisgang Osse, Ph.D., an assistant professor at UNLV's Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine Department of Brain Health will be giving a talk titled, “Exploring the Connection Between Menopause, Brain Health, and Alzheimer’s Disease“
Abstract
Menopause is a biological transition experienced by all women who reach midlife. This transition can last more than a decade and may be accompanied by symptoms including hot flashes, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression, brain fog, and cognitive changes. Although many of these neurological symptoms may be temporary, menopause represents an important window for women’s brain health. Women account for approximately two-thirds of people living with Alzheimer’s disease, highlighting the disproportionate burden of the disease among women. With Alzheimer’s disease-related brain changes coinciding with the timing of menopause, it is critical to understand how this transition may influence long-term brain health and Alzheimer’s disease risk. Our research focuses on understanding women’s brain health through the aging process to help reduce risk, improve diagnosis, and develop more effective treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.
