Description

Black Holes at Work: How Invisible Monsters Shape Galaxies

Travis Fischer, Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore

Black holes are often portrayed as cosmic vacuum cleaners, but in reality they are powerful engines that shape the galaxies around them. In this talk, Fischer explains what black holes really are, how astronomers detect them despite their invisibility, and how observations with the James Webb Space Telescope allow us to see how black holes drive winds, shocks, and change their host galaxies.
