Description

This ethnographic study based in Texas uses the anthropology of therapeutic systems to interpret the public religious behavior of evangelical volunteer ministers. These practitioners act as therapists by using prayer and evangelism to alleviate distress within the recipient, within themselves, and among their community during times of high anxiety. Their toolkit is grounded in the belief that disorder is a state of separation from God. Their interventions are aimed at curing personal and social disorder by bringing God and the subject closer together, constituting a healing modality specific to the culture of their faith.
