NEXTET, the contemporary chamber music series at the UNLV School of Music features 20th and 21st-century concert music performed by faculty, students, and guest artists.

Organized by Jennifer Bellor (artistic director), the concert will feature UNLV faculty pianist Timothy Hoft performing Frederic Rzewski's epic masterpiece, The People United Will Never Be Defeated! This is a set of 36 variations based off of the Chilean song of the same name.

Composed in 1975, this 60-minute work has now been recorded multiple times by some of the world's most accomplished pianists. It is now considered to be a modern classic, and utilizes a vast array of styles, effects, and pianistic tricks.

As is with many of Rzewski's works, the composer invites the performer to improvise a large cadenza at the end of the work, and Timothy Hoft will be up to the task.
