Three artworks hang on a white wall in a gallery. The one in the middle is the largest—a picture of two people with buffalo heads charging over a ploughed field on all fours. The one to the left depicts a woman with her back to us; the one on the right shows us a woman facing a coyote. A zen garden made from red sand-like material lies on the wooden floor in front of the wall. Four white stones stand upright in the square of red. A rake is positioned upright in one corner of the square.

Description

The holidays are almost here. Would you like to join us for a game of mahjong? In many Asian countries, mahjong is a favorite pastime for festive occasions. The tile-based strategy game brings families and friends together for laughter, connection, and friendly competition.

We’re going to gather in the Living Here exhibition to play three different types of mahjong—traditional Chinese, American, and Filipino— surrounded by artworks by Asian American artists. English-language instructions will be provided for new players. Delicious Chinese food from Yunnan Tasty Garden (蟹公子) will be available after the game.

Mahjong at the Barrick takes place at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art on Friday, December 12, from 4-5 p.m. Participation is free. No reservations are required. The event is a collaboration between the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture, the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, and UNLV’s Chinese Corner student club.
