Victor Coelho, director, Center for Early Music Studies, and professor of musicology, Boston University School of Music
Coelho will talk about John Dowland (1563-1626) who is often described as the "Shakespeare of Song" for his vivid poetic delivery and ability to capture the human condition. His lute compositions were based on popular dance forms of the day like pavanes, galliards, and jigs, and were appreciated for bridging the gap between courtly art and more accessible popular music in their day.
