Description
HSI Resource Hub November Webinar with Lourdes E. Echegoyen, Ph. D., Emeritus Research Associate Professor, The University of Texas at El Paso.
Recognizing the impact that undergraduate research experiences could have on a majority Hispanic, low income, undergraduate population, The University of Texas at El Paso established the Campus Office of Undergraduate Research Initiatives (COURI) in 2010 to provide support to undergraduate students to participate in research in its various modalities. As the office developed, the director followed the “Characteristics of Excellence in Undergraduate Research” guidelines published by the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) in 2012 to ensure a culture of excellence was maintained.
Using results of rigorous analyses involving academic metrics for three sets of programs, and their corresponding no-research comparison groups, this presentation describes how all of the guiding characteristics of excellence, with an emphasis on institutional commitment and external funding, have been critical to ensure talented, financially disadvantaged students are intentionally mentored in collaborative, culturally sensitive environments for their successful integration into the STEM workforce.
