HSI Resource Hub December Webinar: Building Effective Mentoring in STEM: Frameworks and Practices from Científico Latino

Office/Remote Location

Online

Description

Mentoring is a critical tool for success in STEM higher education. In this session, Robert W. Fernandez, Ph.D., will share lessons from mentorship programs that focus on STEM graduate school recruitment and retention. Through Científico Latino's flagship program, the Graduate School Mentorship Initiative (GSMI), we support 100 students annually through the graduate school application process by providing mentorship, educational resources, and financial support. From 2019-25, Científico Latino has helped 634 students matriculate to graduate programs. Their second program, Científico Latino Academy, supports first-year graduate student retention through mentorship pods, scientific training, and career exploration. This program has supported 336 graduate students and had a 100% retention rate between 2024 and 2025. By the end of the session, participants will learn about our mentoring frameworks and the educational benefits of integrating these mentorship models at Hispanic Serving Institutions.
