Graduate College: Managing Stress and Avoiding Burnout

Office/Remote Location

Description

The pace of graduate school rarely lets up. Between research deadlines, teaching responsibilities, coursework, and the ever-present pressure to produce, students often push through exhaustion long after their bodies and minds are asking for rest. Burnout is what happens when that pattern continues unchecked. It is a state of chronic emotional exhaustion, growing cynicism or detachment from one's work, and a diminished sense of accomplishment, and it can take hold gradually, often before a student even recognizes what is happening. This workshop will help graduate students understand the difference between everyday stress and true burnout, recognize the early warning signs in themselves and their peers, and explore sustainable strategies for protecting their time, energy, and well-being throughout a demanding program. Participants will leave with practical tools for setting boundaries, pacing their workload, and building habits that support long-term resilience rather than short-term coping.

By participating in this workshop, attendees will:

  1. Distinguish between typical academic stress and burnout, and recognize the early warning signs of each.
  2. Identify personal and structural contributors to burnout in graduate education, including workload, isolation, and unclear expectations.
  3. Develop practical strategies for setting boundaries, pacing workload, and building sustainable habits that protect long-term well-being.
