Graduate assistants (GAs) may encounter challenging situations that require effective communication, conflict resolution skills, and an understanding of available support resources. This workshop will feature two segments focused on navigating professional challenges as a GA. The first part will explore strategies for understanding workplace conflict, practicing active listening, managing difficult conversations, providing constructive feedback, setting professional boundaries, and using conflict de-escalation techniques. The second part will provide an overview of the GA grievance process, including available resolution pathways, documentation and record-keeping practices, and resources available to support graduate assistants in addressing concerns.
By participating in this workshop, attendees will:
- Develop strategies for navigating professional conflict through effective communication, active listening, and constructive problem-solving.
- Learn approaches for managing difficult conversations, setting expectations, and maintaining professional boundaries.
- Gain an understanding of the GA grievance process, documentation practices, and available resources for addressing workplace concerns.
