Who gets to be a scientist? And what does it mean to see yourself as one? Science identity, the extent to which a person sees themselves as a scientist, feels recognized as one by others, and finds meaning in scientific work, plays a powerful role in persistence, motivation, and belonging in graduate education and research careers. This workshop invites graduate students from STEM and health-related disciplines to explore how identity, background, and lived experience shape their relationship to science and research. Through reflection and discussion, participants will examine the social and structural factors that influence science identity, explore how their own identities intersect with their research work, and consider how they might foster more inclusive research cultures.
By participating in this workshop, attendees will:
- Define science identity and understand its relationship to motivation, persistence, and belonging in research environments.
- Reflect on how personal background, culture, and lived experience intersect with their identity as a researcher or scientist.
- Explore strategies for strengthening their own science identity and contributing to more inclusive research communities.
