Description
The UNLV G-RISE program is pleased to welcome our first invited speaker, Anil T. Mangla, Ph.D., an accomplished public health executive and epidemiologist whose career spans scientific research, infectious disease prevention, and public health leadership. Mangla has served as state epidemiologist for both Washington, DC, and Georgia, led major disease surveillance and emergency response efforts, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, and advanced innovative approaches in wastewater epidemiology and infectious disease prevention. He was also elected to the CDC’s Board of Scientific Counselors for Infectious Diseases, where he provides scientific and strategic expertise on critical public health issues.
This presentation shares a career journey from chemistry and drug design to public health leadership and healthcare transformation. Drawing on a Ph.D. in chemistry, an MPH in epidemiology and infection control, and leadership experience in disease surveillance, infectious disease prevention, and healthcare-associated infections, the speaker explores how scientific training can create meaningful opportunities beyond academia. The presentation highlights interdisciplinary collaboration, translating research into practice, and the importance of adaptability in pursuing a career that serves communities. It encourages doctoral students to consider paths in public health leadership, healthcare quality, population health, clinical research, and rural health transformation.
