Sculptures and wall-mounted artworks are arraged in a white-walled gallery. This exhibition evidently revolves around natural materials—everything is soil-brown, grass-green, or off-white. A huge grid of brown rectangles hangs on the wall to the left. Bodysuits lie on pedestals made of earthen tiles. The pedestal closest to us is topped with grass. A projector stands a stack of books, shining an image onto another rectangular tile hung on the wall in front of it.

Description

Jackie Amézquita brings contemporary art together with the forces of la tierra, the earth that supports and nurtures us. Join us for her artist talk on April 24 to find out how she created a practice that embraces both active physical contact with the landscape and monumental artworks that can be experienced within the confines of a gallery. What does it mean to move between places? How has she used the experience of migration to talk about her past, her future?

Amézquita will be joining us online on Friday, April 24, from 3:30–4:30 p.m. from her home base in Los Angeles. The talk will conclude with a question and answer session. Please RSVP to receive a link to the call via email. Attendance is free and everyone is welcome. A recording of the talk will be available online after the event. Amézquita’s solo exhibition, el Camino se Traza al Andar (the Path is Traced by Walking), is on view until June 13 at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art.
