Description

"Linguistic Anthropology of Indigenous Social Media"

Based on Joe Quick's ongoing research with indigenous social media creators from Latin America, this talk explores the application of methods and theories from linguistic anthropology to the social spaces of digital media. The talk covers the use of ethnographic methods in new media spaces; the conclusions of a forthcoming article about transduction, a form of cultural translation that allows skits to be recreated across cultural and linguistic differences; and a new project that explores chronotopes, or socially-circulating expectations about what kinds of people "belong" in certain times and places.
