Overview

American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) student chapter at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has a total of 7 members and one faculty advisor. Only 300 students are eligible to become members. Efforts are underway to increase the number of members.

Seminar: Trespassing and Grade Crossing Accidents on Railways - Why They Exist and What Is Being Done?

This presentation discussed the causes behind the trends and outline alternative methodologies attempted to address the issue. The speaker also highlighted research projects at Michigan Tech that concentrated on investigating human behavior at crossings and the use of mobile platforms for trespasser/grade crossing safety enhancements. 14 students and faculties attended the seminar.

Seminar in Railroad Infrastructure
Oct. 18, 2018, Marco Santoro, Friction Management Applications Manager of LB Foster Rail Technologies Corp.

This seminar introduced friction management along with rail/wheel profiles, grinding and metallurgy are key parameters when optimizing railway operation. The speaker reviewed the benefits of FM: reduced rail wear, fuel consumption, L/V forces, and rolling contact fatigue for freight and reduced noise, corrugation, and wear for transit.12 students and faculties attended the seminar.

SYMPOSIUM Railroad Infrastructure Diagnosis and Prognosis
Oct. 16-17, 2018 - Sponsored by RailTEAM, Rail Transportation Engineering and Advance Maintenance, A Tier-1 University Transportation Center on Improving Rail Transportation Infrastructure Sustainability and Durability.

This symposium discussed the practice and the state of the art in railroad infrastructure diagnosis and prognosis. These professionals presented the new technologies and methods for monitoring and maintaining railroad infrastructure that included both the track and rolling stocks. The research results from the University Transportation Center on Railroad was presented in oral and poster sessions. All the modes of rail transportation were also discussed: passenger and freight rail including high-speed rail. An open discussion was held with the panel of experts and the participating professionals in which the issues with the current and proposed technologies and methods were identified. 22 students and faculties attended the seminar.
