About

A certificate in Geographic Information Systems and Science (GIS) is offered through the Geoscience Department.  Students who complete this GIS certificate program will gain both proficiecy in geographic information systems and a broad conceptual understanding of the geospatial sciences including spatial analysis and problem-solving.  Students will gain experience in collecting and handling geospatial data, map-making, analytical cartography, geospatial visualization, general research methods, oral and written communication and spatial analysis.  This certificate is recommended for students interested in employment in either the public or private sector as a GIS or geospatial analyst/technician, cartographer, planner, or student interested in pursuing futher studies related to the geospatial sciences or where GIS methods and tools might be employed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and explain essential geospatial principles and environmental processes that shape the geomorphology of the physical environment.
  • Analyze the unique properties of geographic data, types of measurements, distributed sources of geospatial data, and inherent limitations of these data for classification and analysis
  • Describe the necessary components of a fully operational GIS inclusive of hardware, software, geospatial data, trained personnel and the necessary components of any GIS project
  • Create digital maps and a poster project that employs best practices of map design and cartography

Department of Geoscience

Geoscience is an all-encompassing term used to refer to the earth sciences. The Department of Geosciences offers programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels where students can learn about topics such as earth processes; the origin and evolution of our planet; the chemical and physical properties of minerals, rocks, and fluids; the structure of our mobile crust; the history of life; and the human adaptation to earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and floods.
