Tracy Carmelo will graduate this spring from the UNLV School of Public Health with a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration.

Carmelo was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2016 to live with her dad.

“The early days of my immigration were undoubtedly challenging,” said Carmelo. “The struggle to adapt to a new environment, communicate in a different language, and navigate unfamiliar customs tested my resilience. I found myself living with people, family I had never met before, and adjusting to this new dynamic was both frightening and eye-opening.”

Carmelo shared that one of the most significant challenges was transition to a new school in the United States. She was overwhelmed by culture shock. Every aspect of life required a conscious effort to understand and integrate. The classrooms, social interactions, and even lunchtime routines became part of a new world she was learning to navigate.

“I have learned to embrace change, appreciate diversity, and find strength in adversity,” said Carmelo. “As I continue to navigate the complexities of my immigration experience, I am grateful for the support and understanding of those around me. The journey is ongoing, and I am committed to facing its challenges with determination and an open heart.”

After a year in Arizona, Carmelo moved to Las Vegas to pursue her degree at UNLV. In addition to her academic responsibilities, Carmelo works full-time so she can provide financial support for her family in the Philippines –specifically to ensure her siblings have access to quality education.

“This dual commitment has allowed me to develop time management, organizational, and multitasking skills that have been crucial in my academic success,” said Carmelo. “I firmly believe that this experience has not only enriched my education but has also prepared me for the challenges of the professional world.”

During the 2023 fall semester, Carmelo experienced another challenge that would test her resilience. After struggling with migraines and moderate hearing loss in her right ear for some time, she was diagnosed with cholesteatoma, an abnormal collection of skin skills inside the ear. The diagnosis led to immediate major ear surgery followed by continued problems afterward. Carmelo didn’t let the situation stop her. She persevered and was able to finish the semester strong while navigating her personal health challenges.

In  addition to her full-schedule and despite navigating her health challenges, Carmelo still was able to find a way to get involved on campus. She served as the vice president of finance for UNLV’s Healthcare Administration Student Association. A role that opened the door to a coordinator position at United Healthcare as well as develop leadership and financial management skills.

After graduation, Carmelo plans to pursue a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration.
