Call for Campus Mediator
Dec. 12, 2021

The UNLV Ombuds Office welcomes applicants for the volunteer position of campus mediator.

Campus mediators must complete the Boyd School of Law’s 40-hour Basic Mediation Essentials course and agree to serve in the mediation pool for three years.

The Mediation Essentials course, which will be paid for by the Ombuds Office for those selected as campus mediators, is being held from January 10 through 14 in person at the Boyd School of Law, from 8 am to 5 pm each day. Attendance and active participation in each session is mandatory to receive the certificate of completion and to be qualified to serve as a campus mediator. The service commitment, once training is complete, is approximately six hours per month for mediations and professional development.

Campus mediators will lead parties seeking resolution of a dispute through an interest-based, rather than position-based, exploration of potential options. Campus mediators do not evaluate conflicts or hand down decisions; rather they help the parties themselves create solutions that they have a stake in.  For more information, please read this summary of facilitative mediation: https://transformingconflictllc.com/family-mediation/facilitative-mediation/

You can learn more about the Ombuds Office’s mediation practice on its Mediation page.

Mediators will receive an annual stipend of $1,000.

The Office will be accepting applications through November 30, and will be notifying applicants of decisions by December 15.
