We see rows of rectangular images suggesting air travel or family gatherings (a woman pushing an airport luggage cart loaded with suitcases, an illustration from an airport’s baggage size-guidelines and so on). Each rectangle is colored a modulated shade of brown. They are translucent, and their uneven surfaces are lightly textured.

Carry On: Story Exchange for African Students

Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art
Friday, November 14, 2025
3–5 p.m.
Free

UNLV’s new African graduate students are invited to join us for a community-centered workshop led by Sumayya Jaeh Iliyasu. Currently a graduate student in English Literature, Iliyasu was previously the Creative Director of the Open Arts Development Foundation, a program designed to strengthen women’s creative writing and publishing in Northern Nigeria.

The workshop was inspired by ”Carry On,” an artwork by the Korean American artist Jisoo Chung, currently on view at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art in Living Here. “Like Chung's ‘Carry On,’ this workshop explores what we carry both physically and emotionally when crossing borders and navigating new environments,“ Iliyasu explains.

Participants will create small paintings and drawings reflecting what they miss from home and what they hope for in their new chapter, followed by a symbolic planting ritual to represent growth and resilience.

Carry On: Story Exchange for African Students will take place at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art on Friday, November 14, from 3–5 p.m. The workshop is intended for graduate students who have recently moved from Africa to the United States to attend classes at UNLV. Attendance is free. All materials will be provided. Parking on the Maryland Parkway campus is free after 1 p.m. on Fridays. Carry On is produced in collaboration with Black Mountain Institute and UNLV’s African Student Alliance (AFA).

About the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art
The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art believes everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that holds space for us all. Located on the campus of one of the most racially diverse universities in the U.S., we strive to create a nourishing environment for those who continue to be neglected by contemporary art museums. As the only art museum in the city of Las Vegas, we commit ourselves to leveling barriers that limit access to the arts. Our collection of artworks offers an opportunity for everyone to develop a deeper knowledge of contemporary art in Southern Nevada. The Barrick Museum is part of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
