First place team from left to right: Thien Nguyen, Austin Choi, Nefeli Georgilas and Hareign Casaclang with C2Society President, Chris Forte.
It was a nail-biting fight to the finish for the two top student teams participating in the recent capture-the-flag (CTF) competition put on by non-profit security awareness organization, C2Society. After a day of exploiting vulnerabilities in software, solving cryptography puzzles and finding hidden “flags” in programs, the top scoring team made up of participants Hareign Casaclang, Nefeli Georgilas, Thien Nguyen, and Austin Choi just barely beat out second-place team 'Look Ma No Ram' by a few hundred points.
Hosted by the Nevada Institute of Cybersecurity at UNLV, the competition provided novices and experienced students alike the opportunity to practice their cybersecurity knowledge and skills. Cybersecurity professionals with C2Society volunteered their time to not only create and deliver the experience, but were on hand to mentor and help students through each challenge. C2Society is a frequent collaborator and another CTF for 2026 is already being planned.
