How did your experience at UNLV help you find your first position after graduation?

My experience at UNLV was incredibly valuable. It gave me hands-on insight into what school counselors actually do—beyond just scheduling and setting up classes. I had the opportunity to work with amazing mentors who let me lead projects, run groups, and really immerse myself in the role. That real-world exposure helped me build confidence and skills that translated directly into my first job.

What classes do you recommend for someone who wants to be in your position?

Any class related to mental health is essential. Being able to recognize symptoms, understand emotional needs, and respond appropriately is key in this field. Even the foundational counseling classes are critical.

What are the most sought-after skills in your field right now?

Crisis intervention and mental health support are absolutely vital. Even though we focus a lot on academics at the high school level, the social-emotional component is constant.
