Name: Elena Nourrie
Degree: ‘17 M.Ed. Higher Ed
Current Employer: So'oh-Shinálí Sister Project
What is your current position and how did UNLV prepare you for your career?
I am a cofounder and the Executive Director of So'oh-Shinálí Sister Project. The support of faculty members—Dr. Kim Nehls, Dr. Doris Watson, and Dr. Nancy Lough—prepared me to apply critical thinking in my approach to systemic work. Through their support I secured generous scholarships, traveled internationally, presented research, and contributed to book chapters and OpEd pieces.
What was a fun and/or unique class you took?
EDH 750: Through this course, I studied tribal colleges and delved even further into Native history and advocacy within higher education. I read publications by Native scholars and tribal leaders whom I admired and learned how to integrate their teachings into my work, fostering a sense of belonging within Native American student centers. This course resonated deeply and put me in the driver’s seat in terms of next steps in my career and path in higher education.
How do you decompress from a busy work period?
I like to decompress through physical movement. This could be a long walk with my kids, intentional stretching, cycling, or strength training. Coupling prayer with individual movement helps me re-center and find balance during busy weeks as a mom and community member.
