Additional Information
As of September 2026, California does not license athletic trainers. However, California Business and Professions Code Section 2529.8.1 (effective January 1, 2025) establishes title protection, meaning only individuals who: 1) meet the appropriate educational requirements [i.e., graduation from a college or university after completing an athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAPTE), or its predecessors or successors]; and 2) maintain their Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainer may identify themselves as an "athletic trainer," "certified athletic trainer," "licensed athletic trainer," "registered athletic trainer," or any other term such as "AT," "ATC," "LAT," or "CAT." UNLV's Master of Science in Athletic Training program is accredited by CAPTE, which meets criterion 1. Graduates of this program are then eligible to sit for the BOC certification exam which would satisfy criterion 2.
