Biography

Yan Chen is an assistant professor in instructional technology and design in the teaching and learning department. Before joining UNLV, she was a postdoctoral fellow with a joint appointment with the learning sciences and engineering programs at the University of New Mexico. She obtained her doctoral degree in instructional technology from Northern Illinois University, and a master’s in Chinese language and literature for Nationalities from the Minzu University of China. Her research interests focus on how people learn through social interaction when situated in hybrid, technology-based learning spaces. In addition, she is interested in how sociocultural and historical settings shape these interactions and how to design new cultural practices for equitable learning. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Educational Technology Research and Development, Language Learning & Technology, Learning, Culture, and Social Interaction, and Journal of Engineering Education. She currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in preparing teachers to use technology.
